A good meta description is a 140–160 character summary that matches what the searcher is looking for, uses the main keyword naturally and gives a concrete reason to click. Google doesn’t use it to rank pages and often rewrites it. But when Google does show your description, it’s the closest thing you have to free ad copy in the organic results.

**Key takeaways**

- Aim for about 140–160 characters and put the essential message in the first 120, because mobile results show less.

- Write for the query, not the page: answer “is this the result I want?” in one or two sentences.

- Every page needs its own description. Duplicates make results look interchangeable and are more likely to be ignored.

- Google rewrites descriptions when a different passage on the page matches the query better. You can’t prevent that, only make rewrites less necessary.

## What Google does with your meta description

The meta description lives in the page’s `<head>` and never appears on the page itself:

```
```

Google’s documentation on [controlling snippets](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet) says it mainly builds snippets from the page content. It may use the meta description when that describes the page better than any passage on the page. In other words, the description is a suggestion, not an instruction.

It isn’t a ranking factor either. Google confirmed in a [2009 post](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag) that it doesn’t use the description meta tag in ranking, and nothing it has published since says otherwise. Its value is indirect: a clearer, more relevant snippet earns more clicks from the same position. That’s what the [click-through rate](https://yes-seo.com/glossary/ctr) measures.

## How long should a meta description be?

There’s no official limit. Google says a description can be any length, but the snippet is truncated to fit the device. As with titles, the cut-off is based on pixel width, not characters.

| Where it’s shown | Approximate width | Roughly how many characters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Desktop results | About 920 px | 150–160 |
| Mobile results | About 680 px | About 120 |

That gives you a practical rule: write 140–160 characters, and make sure the first 120 make sense on their own. Put the keyword, the offer and any key fact (price, location, size, time) early. The tail end can carry the extra persuasion that only desktop users will see.

Google sometimes shows a date in front of the snippet, which takes up space. On articles, that’s another reason to front-load the important words.

## Best practices that actually change clicks

### Match the search intent

Ask what someone typing your main query wants to know before they click. For a product query, it’s price, options and delivery. For a how-to query, it’s whether the guide covers their exact situation. For a local query, it’s location, hours and availability. A description that answers that question beats a clever slogan every time. Our glossary entry on [search intent](https://yes-seo.com/glossary/search-intent) covers the main intent types.

### Use the keyword once, naturally

Google often highlights words in the snippet that match the query, so including the main phrase helps your result stand out. Use it once, in a normal sentence. A list of keyword variations looks like spam and is a common reason for Google to write its own snippet instead.

### Give a concrete reason to click

Specific facts persuade better than adjectives. “Free returns within 60 days” beats “great service”. “Ready in 45 minutes” beats “delicious and easy”. A short call to action, such as “Compare plans”, “Book online” or “See the checklist”, works when it tells people what they’ll get. Only state things that are true on the page, otherwise the visitor bounces straight back to the results.

### Make every description unique

Google’s snippet guidelines recommend a unique description for each page. On a large site, that doesn’t mean writing thousands by hand. Generate descriptions from the page’s own data instead:

```
{Product name} in {colors}. {Key feature}. Sizes {range}, {delivery promise}.
{Category} from {brand list}: {count}+ styles, {price range}. {Shipping or returns perk}.
```

A template filled with real attributes is far better than one sitewide description, and far better than none. To find duplicates across a site, a [website SEO audit](https://yes-seo.com/website-seo-audit) lists pages that share the same description.

### Watch the HTML

A raw double quote inside the attribute ends it early, so your description stops mid-sentence. Use single quotes in the text or encode double quotes as `&quot;`. Avoid line breaks and avoid stuffing in emoji to grab attention, since Google may not display them.

## When Google ignores your description

Even a well-written description won’t always appear. Google is most likely to write its own snippet when:

- **The query is specific** and a passage on the page answers it better than your summary. Rewrites tend to be more common for long, specific queries than for short ones.

- **The description is missing, very short or boilerplate**, such as the same sentence on every page.

- **It doesn’t match the page**, for example an old description left after a rewrite.

- **It’s a list of keywords** rather than a sentence.

You can’t force Google to use your text, but you can control what it may show. The `data-nosnippet` attribute keeps a section of the page out of snippets, and the `max-snippet` robots directive caps snippet length. Both are documented in Google’s guide to [robots meta tags](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag). Use them carefully: they also limit what Google can show in AI features.

A rewrite isn’t a failure. It usually means Google found a passage that fits that particular query better. Your description still matters for the queries where it fits, and for many social and messaging apps that fall back to it when there’s no Open Graph description.

## Write the description together with the title

The title and description form one snippet, so draft them as a pair. The title states the topic, and the description adds what the title had no room for: detail, proof and the next step. Avoid repeating the title word for word. Our guide to [SEO title length](https://yes-seo.com/blog/seo-title-length) covers the other half, and the [SERP preview](https://yes-seo.com/serp-preview) lets you see both together with real truncation.

## Check the meta descriptions on your pages

Run any URL through our free [meta tags checker](https://yes-seo.com/meta-tags-checker). It lists the description alongside every other meta tag, with length and pixel-width checks and a suggested fix when something is missing, too long or too short.
