GEO (generative engine optimization): Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content accessible, understandable and citable for AI systems that generate answers.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI-powered answer systems to retrieve, understand, trust and cite. Where classic SEO aims for a ranked blue link, GEO aims for a mention or a citation inside a generated response — in ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al.), which tested how content changes affect visibility in generative engine answers. In their experiments, adding citations to credible sources, quotations and concrete statistics increased how prominently a source appeared, while traditional keyword stuffing did little.

How generative engines pick sources

Most AI search products work in roughly three steps: retrieve candidate pages from a search index (their own or a partner’s), read the most relevant passages, then write an answer that cites some of them. Each step suggests a lever:

  1. Be retrievable. The engine’s crawler must be allowed in, and the page must be in its index. That means robots.txt access for search bots such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, no firewall blocks, and indexing in Google and Bing, which many systems draw on.
  2. Be readable. Key content belongs in server-rendered HTML. Many AI crawlers don’t execute JavaScript, so text injected client-side may simply not exist for them.
  3. Be quotable. Short, self-contained passages that answer one question precisely are easier to lift into an answer than long, hedged paragraphs.
  4. Be credible. Named authors, dates, primary sources and specific data give a model reason to prefer your passage over a vaguer one.

GEO in practice

  • Open each section with a direct answer, then add depth.
  • State facts with numbers, units, dates and sources rather than adjectives.
  • Use consistent names for your brand, products and people, and describe them with Organization, Product or Person schema.
  • Keep pages current; many AI answers favor fresh information for time-sensitive topics.
  • Earn mentions on other reputable sites. Generative systems learn what a brand is from the wider web, not only from your own pages.

What GEO is not

GEO is not a replacement for SEO; most of it is good SEO, applied with a different reader in mind. It is also not a set of hidden tricks. Hidden prompt-injection text aimed at AI crawlers is manipulation that platforms actively work to detect and discount — and it puts your credibility at risk. And it doesn’t require special files: llms.txt is an optional proposal that no major AI platform has confirmed using for ranking or citations, so treat it as a low-cost extra, not a lever. A closely related term, AEO (answer engine optimization), focuses specifically on being chosen as the direct answer.

Common mistakes

Blocking AI search bots while trying to appear in AI answers, confusing training bots with search bots, rewriting content into keyword-heavy prose, and measuring nothing. Check your referral traffic from AI platforms and test the questions you want to be cited for.

How to check

The AI SEO Checker scores a page from 0 to 100 for AI visibility: AI crawler access in robots.txt, server-rendered text, snippet directives, answer-ready structure, entity schema, author and date signals, freshness and citations. Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

It overlaps heavily. GEO uses the same foundations — crawlability, indexing, quality content — but optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers rather than only for ranking as a link.

Which AI crawlers should I allow for GEO?

Allow the search and user-fetch bots of the platforms you want to appear in, such as OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and PerplexityBot. Training bots like GPTBot and ClaudeBot are a separate decision.

Do I need an llms.txt file for GEO?

No. llms.txt is an optional proposal, and no major AI platform has confirmed using it for ranking or citations. It is cheap to add, but crawler access and clear content matter far more.
